Why U.S. Highway 2?

I grew up on U.S. Highway 2 (Montana's Hi-Line) for most of my first 18 years. Until I was six, our family lived just 40 miles north of U.S. 2 in Whitlash in the Sweet Grass Hills, a stone's throw from the Alberta border. I have long wanted to travel the entire length of U.S. 2 in order to connect the part I know with the unknown rest of it, and decided that 2011 would be the year to do it. But other priorities crowded in on that dream until a trip across the country (with stretches in Canada) downsized to driving the middle portion of U.S. 2.

This blog will chronicle that journey and, in the process, a great many digressions that will be journeys of their own.

Writing a blog (my first) about the great Highway 2 drive is another ambitious dream. I know how to drive, but I'm not so sure about blogging, which holds as many mysteries as the yet unseen miles of U.S. 2. For example, I'm not sure what the protocol for ending a blog post may be. I'll make one up: "My dog is coming along for the ride! You can, too."
